The first purported images of the long-rumored aluminum Nokia Lumia smartphone codenamed 'Catwalk' have appeared in the wild. The photos surfaced on the Chinese social networking site Sina Weibo. The device takes design cues from the current Lumia range, but wraps the device in an aluminum shell instead of the polycarbonate that currently features on Nokia's Windows Phone Lumia smartphone range.

Although sources indicate that the images are likely to be genuine, what is not clear at this stage is whether the device pictured is an early prototype, or something approaching the final design. The device would be the successor to the current Lumia flagship, the Lumia 920, and will continue with a 4.5-inch display and be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core processor. Early rumors suggest that it uses a Snapdragon S4, although if it is a true successor to the Lumia 920, it can be expected to be powered by a Snapgragon 600 at a minimum by the time it ships. The device pictured also features a larger than usual camera module, indicating it could carry the a high-end PureView module.

Apple led the aluminum charge with its iPhone 5 and since then, HTC has followed suit by wrapping its acclaimed HTC One design in an aluminum unibody enclosure as well. Samsung, however, has continued with a plastic design for its new Galaxy S 4 although is said to have plans to move to higher quality materials in the future. The arrival of an aluminum Nokia Lumia would also help to ensure that mobile users can expect to be able to choose from a wider range of smartphone with premium builds in the near future.
