Outbound Microsoft Chief Financial Officer Peter Klein revealed in today's financial conference call
that Microsoft is working with partner companies to build a "new suite of small touch devices powered by Windows" at "competitive price points." The devices are expected in the "coming months" according to Klein. The executive declined to name partner companies, specific prices, or detail specifications.
The comment gives weight to earlier rumors
of the Washington state manufacturer working on the form factor for the future. A recent revision
to tablet minimum specifications for Windows 8.1 allows for a minimum resolution of 1024x768, making the smaller form factor possible for the "Metro" environment in Windows 8 and Windows RT. While the resolution is usable for the Windows 8 desktop, practical use of it on a small screen may not be possible.
