Usage of tablets to view BBC content on its streaming service has beaten that of smartphones for the first time. Information published by the BBC saw 200,000 more iPlayer requests from tablets than mobile phones, with the combined usage of mobile devices making up 30-percent of all requests, namely 81 million requests for March alone.

The corporation has seen its Live Restart feature for TV shows put to good use, with iPlayer usage for TV shown to happen at the same time of day as its linear TV counterpart, though with a proportionately higher daytime and late-peak use. While normal TV broadcast viewer numbers typically peak at 9pm with 26.8 million users, the iPlayer manages to hit its own peak an hour later, for 495,000 viewers.

While the percentage of iPlayer requests for mobile devices has increased year-on-year from 15 percent to 30 percent, other device percentage shares are dropping. Game console use of iPlayer fell by almost half, now resting at 3 percent, and computer requests are down from 59 percent to 47 percent, though the number of requests have gone up by 16 million to 128 million for the month.

Overall figures for BBC iPlayer requests show it as equalling its record of 272 million requests, as set in January.
