Invitations sent to media for a product reveal at Microsoft's Xbox campus suggest that the company is close to unveiling its new game console
. The invitation, headed with the Xbox logo, alluding to "A new generation revealed" and using the hashtag #XboxReveal, strongly hints that the event will show off the much-rumored successor to the Xbox 360.
The event will take place on May 21st, as predicted
by Paul Thurrot, and will be held in Redmond Washington, with president of interactive entertainment Don Mattrick and the Xbox team said to be in attendance. A blog post
by Larry Hyrb, known as "Major Nelson," goes on to state that the event will be broadcast on Spike TV in the US and Canada, and will also be streamed through the Xbox website and to consoles via Xbox Live. The Microsoft keynote at E3, held 19 days later, will provide more details about the console and its full lineup of launch titles.
have suggested that the device will have an always-on Internet connection in order to play games, that physical titles will need to be registered to individual accounts, and that the Blu-ray game discs will have a 50GB capacity. The console itself
is said to have an AMD eight-core X64 1.6GHz processor, a GPU supporting D3D 11.x at 800Mhz, and may have HDMI-in as well as HDMI-out.
It is unknown if Microsoft will show a physical representation of the console, or will instead concentrate on demonstrating the user experience at the event. An earlier press event by Sony showed the new features of the PlayStation 4
, but did not reveal the appearance of the console, save for the DualShock 3 game controller.
