Apple has filed revisions to its plans for "Campus 2," the spaceship-shaped new campus that is now expected to be completed in 2016, a year late and some $2 billion over budget. Pushed back to a second phase with no timetable, a set of adjacent buildings known as the Tantau Development will now be delayed and not built on the same schedule as the main building. The new plans -- the sixth revision to the approved layout -- will also offer more bike and walking paths along the private roads on the grounds around the main building.

The company has also decided to add another 240 spaces total to a pair of proposed parking lots, bringing the total to 10,980 spaces (some of the garages on Campus 2 will be underground), as well as include four new "public art" installations. The Tantau Development was originally planned to be a set of office buildings totalling 600,000 square feet, with one office building encompassing 200,000 square feet originally planned to be built alongside the main new campus. The planned "Phase One" building would have housed 2,200 employees along North Tantau Avenue.

The changes are the first official revisions filed since Apple admitted earlier this month that the project, started by co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs, was behind schedule and over budget. The move to delay the Tantau office park will save Apple having to develop the Tantau land right away, and include the Phase One costs in the Phase Two budget. Apple last changed the plans five months ago to alter an underground auditorium and an access road leading to it.

The revision comes with new detail and visualizations for the pathways as well as the Tantau Development and the main, 2.8 million square foot main building. Many of the cost overruns and delays are said to spring from the insistence on expensive, high-quality and in some cases revolutionary materials demanded by Jobs, including some of the largest curved-glass panes ever created.

The changes may help explain the rapid progress on the Austin TX campus expansion project, which also includes new office, R&D and engineering centers and at least one parking garage to accommodate the expected 7,500 employees that will eventually be located there by 2015 or possibly earlier. The Austin center has been designated the "Americas Operations Center," covering North, Central and South America distribution, support, logistics, finance, marketing and administrative personnel alongside engineering teams. It is possible that Apple plans to move some employees originally set for the Tantau center to Austin, at least temporarily.

A state of the art building, cost overruns and some delays are to be expected. Hope the management decides to give tours to the public. I don't see myself erve doings line to purchase am iDevice; but would gladly do a long cue to tour what will likely be one of the most modern working environments ever. Even more so since Steve, with his maniacal attention to usually overlooked details, managed the whole project not as a commercial product aimedat making a profit, but as his best take as the Moder office.

If this building has some butt-kicking theme and thrill rides, I will be there.
