is preparing to put the Snapdragon 800 processor into mass production, starting in late May. The system-on-chip follows on from the highly sought-after Snapdragon 600, which has been used in such devices as the LG Optimus G Pro
and reportedly had "strong traction" in recent quarterly results
, and promises to provide a significant speed boost compared to its 1.7GHz predecessor.
Senior product manager Yufei Wang confirmed to Engadget
the production date for the 28nm chip, but declined to offer what devices or manufacturers are lined up to receive it in the future. Though some phone producers have used the chip in test cases, such as ZTE showing the Grand Memo
at Mobile World Congress, Wang did suggest waiting until June for news of further developments from manufacturers.
Inside the Snapdragon 800 SoC is the Krait 400 architecture, allowing the CPU with its four asynchronous cores to reach speeds of 2.3GHz without much in the way of power usage. The Adreno 330 GPU provides graphical power, including 4K playback at 30fps, while connectivity over 802.11ac Wi-Fi, USB 3.0, 4G LTE, and Miracast are also provided. An improved Quick Charge
system and voice activation are also integrated into the chip.
