A new 3D printer from botObjects is said to be the first in the world to perform full color 3D prints on a desktop. The ProDesk3D aims to improve existing 3D printing products aimed at end users, such as the MakerBot range of devices, by offering a desktop printer that is touted to combine high accuracy with a mature physical design, as well as simplifying the 3D printing process.

Housed in an anodized aluminum casing, the ProDesk 3D is capable of accuracy as fine as 25 microns in both PLA and PVA plastic, while ABS printing is also possible. In order to make printing easier for the non-technically minded, the printer uses a proprietary 5-color PLA cartridge system, which is able to mix the colors for the system's dual-extruder head. Self-calibration software will automatically set the printer up, calibrating the printer bed for the user, and the build platform has a tri-fan system designed to balance airflow and prevent temperature-based printing mistakes.

"The ProDesk 3D was designed based on our view of what this industry would look like in five years," said botObjects chief executive and co-founder Martin Warner in a statement. Chief technical officer and co-founder Mike Duma added "We wanted to create a product with a sense of maturity, representing its advancements inside the product, as well as a casing with a strong artistic presence."

Though there is currently not a price set for the ProDesk3D, it is expected to be in a similar price range to other 3D desktop printers. Based on the Formlabs 3D printer Kickstarter and Makerbot Replicator prices, this could be around $2,000. The company hopes to ship initial orders from this June.
