MediaTek has launched its new quad-core System-on-Chip aimed for use in smartphones designed for emerging markets. The MT6572 is claimed to be the first dual-core SoC in the world with integrated Wi-Fi, FM, GPS, and Bluetooth functionality, something that could help lower the production cost of budget-ranged smartphones further.

Using a Cortex-A7 CPU subsystem, the 28nm-process SoC is capable of running at 1.2GHz and integrates a HSPA+/TD-SCDMA modem, supports displays at a qHD 960x540 resolution, is capable of 720p video playback and recording, and can support a camera with a 5-megapixel camera sensor.

MediaTek has already started shipping the MT6572 to manufacturers, and expects the first devices with the SoC to be released in June.
