Microsoft is looking to create a set-top box for media playback, according to one report. Continuing previous rumors, the software giant is working on a device that will allow users to sign onto Xbox Live and use its apps to view streaming video, effectively cloning the non-gaming aspects of the Xbox 360 game console into a relatively-cheap product.

It is suggested by the Wall Street Journal that such a device would cost $99, putting it on par with the Apple TV and the more-expensive model of Roku. Sources claim it has gone through a number of iterations, including ones with Kinect-style motion controls. While it is still allegedly being developed, it is possible that Microsoft may shelve the project, as a cheaper Xbox 360 price once the company's new console launches could severely hit the demand for such a set-top box.

A living room device for streaming video from the Internet is also being looked into by Amazon. Rumors last month and reiterated yesterday suggests it could build a device that will concentrate on providing Instant Video and Prime Instant Video to customers, rather than through apps on other systems.
