Samsung will soon be providing a theft recovery service for its devices, starting with the flagship Galaxy S4. LoJack, created by Absolute Software for securing notebook computers, will be released for Android, with Samsung embedding it into the firmware for future activation, in the event that the phone is stolen from the user.

At first glance, LoJack provides a similar service to other security apps, by remotely locking the device and deleting sensitive data from its memory. CNet notes that the software will be accompanied by a service from the Absolute Theft Recovery Team, which will help locate and return the phone to its rightful owner, or failing that, paying for a replacement phone.

The addition of LoJack to the Galaxy S4's firmware is another part of Samsung Knox, the company's strategy to improve security on devices for corporations and government organizations. As a subscription service, it could be seen by users as a form of insurance, if only for part of what normal mobile phone insurance would cover.

Due later this Summer, LoJack for Android will start from $30 for one year of protection, with four years being the longest subscription available to purchase. It is not clear if LoJack will be made available to other phone manufacturers in the future.
