A twin-headed USB drive called iTwin Connect, which allows private and public VPN services using a thumb drive dongle, is now available for Mac users running OS X Snow Leopard, Lion or Mountain Lion alongside Windows users. The secure-storage-and-sharing solution using the two-part USB key provides end-to-end encryption for mirroring files, allowing data transfer of files too large for email or too sensitive to transfer using conventional VPN or cloud services. The software for Mac, which was in beta since January, is now final and available.

Each two-piece, double-headed USB iTwin sells for $199, with no subscription fees. Users connect the iTwin to their own computer and indicate what files or folders should be shared; the other "half" is then detached and plugged into the target computer, creating an automatic secure VPN channel where the "shared" files are transferred with no storage limit between the two authorized machines. The devices use 256-bit AES encryption throughout the process.

The device can also be used to browse the web privately by plugging one half of the device into a computer and selecting one of the public servers deployed by iTwin, handy for areas or offices that have internet restrictions. Remote desktop-type software is also included for both Mac and Windows, allowing secured access to the machine with the other "half" of the device. The iTwin Connect can also require an optional 2-factor authenticated password if desired. The product is available from the company's website or from Amazon.
