Samsung has launched its Galaxy S4 Zoom
smartphone and compact camera hybrid. The reveal, after multiple photographs were leaked
, follows on from the similar Galaxy Camera
and shows it to have generally lower specifications compared to the Galaxy S4
, but upgrades the camera to a 16-megapixel version with 24-240mm 10x optical zoom.
The smartphone side has a 4.3-inch qHD sAMOLED display, powered by a dual-core 1.5GHz processor with 1.5GB of RAM, and will be available in both 3G and LTE versions. Internal storage is 8GB but expandable by microSD, it uses Android 4.2, and also has Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, Glonass, and a 2,330mAh battery.
The 16-megapixel CMOS sensor has optical image stabilization and a Xenon flash, can use a maximum of ISO 3200, and houses an F3.1-F6.3 lens. It is capable of taking continuous shots at 4 frames per second, and has an external "Zoom Ring" that can be twisted to change camera modes and to perform in-call sharing. As usual for a smartphone, it offers a catalog of camera modes, including automatic suggestions for its Smart Mode, Best Photo, HDR, Panorama, and animated photos. Accompanying the large rear camera is a front-facing 1.9-megapixel counterpart.
While a price and general release information for the Galaxy S4 Zoom has not been revealed, it is said to be shipping in the UK later this summer.
