Samsung has signed a deal with Jay-Z to distribute his latest album to owners of select Galaxy smartphones, 72 hours before its retail release. The agreement, announced via a three-minute advertisement during Game 5 of the NBA Finals, involves 1 million albums being given away to Samsung users on July 4th, as part of a reported $20 million marketing deal.
An app for the Magna Carta Holy Grailalbum will be made available on Google Play on June 24th for Galaxy S4, Galaxy S III, and Galaxy Note II users, promising an "unprecedented inside look into the album" when it unlocks on July 4th. The app will also be shareable with other Galaxy owners over Facebook, Twitter, and S Beam, but this could still be limited to just the three listed handsets, rather than others in the Samsung range.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Samsung is paying $5 per album for the privilege, though it is not clear if Nielsen SoundScan will be counting this in its sales figures. Considering the $20 million figure of the deal, the free albums represent a quarter of the agreement's value, with the remainder most likely going towards other Jay-Z marketing activities over the summer and towards the end of this year.
