Instagram has enjoyed a successful launch of its video feature
, with users uploading 5 million clips within the first 24 hours of it being available to use. The new addition to the app, providing similar functionality to that of Twitter-owned Vine, caused Facebook servers to receive 40 hours of video footage per minute at its highest point, with the win of Miami Heat over the San Antonio Spurs during the NBA finals the cause of the peak usage.
Company representatives speaking to CNET
confirmed the figures, including the fact that it had received so many video clips in its first eight hours that it would take a year to watch every single one. The high number of users reportedly caused capacity issues, with some finding the service slow to load.
While the launch has been a success to Instragram and Facebook, it is difficult to tell if it will supersede Twitter-owned Vine
. Though Vine has been around for a longer period, and so has built up an audience, Instagram Video offers its users a longer 15-second video clip capacity, as well as image stabilization, basic clip editing, and an assortment of filters, something which could be considered more complicated compared to Vine.
