Sony has unveiled its heavily rumored Xperia Z Ultra (pdf) phablet packing a 6.4-inch 1080p Triluminos display, the Sony smartphone to use the technology. Confirming rumors, the Xperia Z Ultra is also capable of supporting input with any pencil, capacitive stylus or pen. Rounding out the package, the Ultra is powered by Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 800 clocked at 2.2GHz with support for 4G LTE networks.
The Xperia Z Ultra is the first Sony smartphone to feature Sony's patented Trilumios technology, which first debuted on certain high-end Sony flat-panel TVs. Sony also recently introduced the technology on its latest generation of ultrabooks as well. According to the Japanese company, the display will produce richer colors thanks to its support for a wider color gamut. Further boosting the quality of the visuals is Sony's X-Reality tech for enhancing overall image sharpness.
The Xperia Z Ultra weighs in at 212 grams and is just 0.27-inches thick (6.5mm). It will ship with 16GB of storage, but also sports a microSD slot that can support 64GB cards. The Ultra features an 8-megapixel camera with an Exmor RS sensor capable of shooting both video and taking stills in HDR, while it also incorporates Sony's ClearAudio+ and Xloud sound enhancements. To help keep the Ultra powering on, Sony has built in a 3,000mAh battery that can be further optimized for power saving with Sony's Stamina tech. The Xperia Z Ultra is also waterproof, ramping things up a notch over the Xperia Z, which is water-resistant.
To help keep things manageable on the go, Sony has also paired the Xperia Z Ultra with a new Smart Bluetooth handset (SBH52) than can handle hands-free calls with a single button press. It can also be used as a stereo music headset and includes an FM radio with RDS. The Sony Xperia Z Ultra will ship with Android 4.2.2 'Jelly Bean' when it launches globally in Q3.
