Microsoft revealed a number of details relating to the Windows Store and Metro apps at its Build 2013 developer conference, at the same time as showing off the Windows 8.1 update. New apps heading to the store were mentioned in the keynote presentation, along with the adoption of the app store by developers and users, and the future addition of Metro-style Office applications to the store in the future.

The Windows Store itself now has close to 100,000 apps available to download by users, with the company hoping to break the milestone sometime in the next month, and expecting there to be around 175,000 apps by the end of January. The company also revealed to Engadget that "hundreds of millions" of app downloads have taken place, but did not offer an exact number of downloads.

Official versions of apps for Flipboard, Facebook, and NFL Fantasy Football will be arriving on Windows 8 at some point in the future. The apps are likely to stay close to the existing Metro experience, with Flipboard providing a brief preview of its app in an eight-second video clip.

Productivity app Office will also make the transition to Metro. Sessions held before Build saw Microsoft demonstrate PowerPoint to media, which will be released alongside Word and Excel in the Windows Store, joining the already-existing Metro versions of OneNote and Lync. ZDNet reports that this new version of Office had a target release for October 2013, the same time as Windows 8.1 is expected to be released, but they may be delayed, and end up being released after the holiday season.
