Google's Motorola Mobile has made a massive advertising buy in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post
, and USA Today
promoting the Moto X smartphone, which the ad calls "the first smartphone designed, engineered, and assembled in the USA." The new device, teased at the D12 expo
earlier this year, is claimed to be "the first smartphone that you can design yourself."
Rumors circulating earlier this year claimed that the phone was as customizable as constructing a PC, but how that would be accomplished in a device that needs to adhere to communication standards isn't clear. Also claimed is that users will be able to choose which carrier the phone will use, as well as color, storage size, and possibly even the processor.
Alternative rumors have pegged the phone as carrying a 1.7GHz dual-core MSM8960 Pro processor with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. Its front camera is said to have a resolution of 2MP, while its rear camera should have a resolution of 10MP.
Motorola Mobile CEO Dennis Woodside claimed to have the smartphone in his pocket on stage during the D12 conference but declined to show it to interviewers Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher. Woodside claimed that durability and battery life were paramount considerations while designing the device.
