may be looking towards moving into wearable computing, as the company continues to struggle against receding computer shipment
figures. Global vice president of personal computing Sam Burd said that the PC producer is "exploring areas in that space," which could see Dell go against other major manufacturers in an emerging product market.
In an interview with the Guardian
, Burd talked about how Dell could end up being part of the new market which is occupied by Google Glass
, the Sony Smartwatch
, and Pebble
, with Samsung
both rumored to offer their own smart watches in the future. "There are challenges in cost, and how to make it a really good experience," said Burd, continuing "But the piece that's interesting is that computers are getting smaller. Having a watch on your wrist - that's pretty interesting, pretty appealing."
Despite a shrinking market, Burd spoke about how there will "still be a need for 'static computing on desktops," with mobile devices becoming more of a focus. "There's a lot of discussion about how that fits into wearable devices like we've seen with Google Glass and watches. We're looking at a world of lots of connected devices."
Burd also told of how Windows 8 on tablets has failed to take off with Dell customers, and while stating that "Businesses are slow to adopt to a new operating system," he is still encouraged to "see some businesses deploying Windows 8 and tablets." He suggests that Windows 8 tablets could end up "being a third or 40 percent of tablet volume," though he admits that Dell has only sold "hundreds of thousands" of the Latitude 10
and XPS 10
tablets so far.
