is working with Qualcomm on solving the indoor mapping problem, by supplying its collection of floor plans and indoor map data. Qualcomm will use the venue maps with its IZat
indoor location system to improve its overall accuracy, in order to locate mobile devices to within three to five meters (10 to 16 feet) inside a building.
IZat uses a variety of data points in order to work out its physical location, with the signal strength of Wi-Fi access points and cellular coverage, along with other sensors, pinpointing a location when GPS is unavailable. The data from Nokia's Here Maps currently covers 50,000 buildings in 69 countries according to a company blog post
, with mapmakers visiting locations to confirm floorplans received earlier and to fill out the data with points of interest.
Cliff Fox, senior vice president of Location Content for Nokia Here said "Indoor spaces are among the new frontiers in mapping, and Here is uniquely positioned to bring its global leadership in outdoor mapping to inside venues."
Nokia and Qualcomm are not the only ones working on indoor mapping solutions. Google has been spending some time working on a similar system
for Google Maps, which also uses Wi-Fi and cellular network strength for positioning.
