The purported rear case for the second-generation iPad mini has leaked out. As can be seen from the photos embedded below, the case is almost identical to the current model. One subtle difference between the case and the original iPad mini case is that the Apple logo is now molded into the rear panel, rather than simply printed on -- the same is true of the redesigned fifth-generation iPad case that recently leaked that is shown side-by-side with the new iPad mini case in the photos below.

While some have speculated that Apple may utilize its recently awarded liquid metal patent in the next iPhone, the appearance of the molded logo in the new iPad mini and next-gen iPad is intriguing. A molded aluminum casing may not be strong enough to withstand being pressed or inadvertently being bumped, whereas a liquid metal design could be more robust and better suited to such a design alteration. The current iPad mini, along with the iPhone 5, have both been subject to some criticisms that they are not as robust as they could or should be. A liquid metal casing, if feasible for this current generation, could help rectify these concerns.

Additionally, the hot speculation about the next iPad mini centers on whether it will ship with a Retina display panel. A report from the Wall Street Journal yesterday indicated that the iPad mini could well be in line for a Retina revamp sometime in the fourth quarter. According to the Journal's sources, the iPad mini could also come in multiple rear case colors. While this is the first apparent look at the iPad mini casing, we have yet to see any further indication that this is indeed what Apple has planned for the successor to the November 2012 model. ...the choice of black (or any non-aluminum color) anodizing and sharp edges for any modern high wear design (black iPhone 5) is a choice I cannot understand - visible wear would seem inevitable by design...?

The stuff actually ages rather nicely. But that's obviously a matter of taste.
