IBM is accelerating its Linux on Power initiative with a new high-performance PowerLinux server as well as new software and middleware applications. The new PowerLinux 7R4 server, built on the same Power Systems platform running IBM's Watson cognitive computing solution has been released, as well as new versions of IBM Cognos Business Intelligence and EnterpriseDB database software, optimized for the new hardware.

The PowerLinux 7R4 is the high-end addition to IBM's line-up of Power Systems PowerLinux servers running industry standard Linux from Red Hat and SUSE. The new server delivers boasts up to 4 processor sockets and 32 cores -- ideal for clients seeking a Linux solution capable of handling compute-intensive workloads including analytics, cognitive computing, database and web infrastructure. The PowerLinux 7R4 takes advantage of the same virtualization, middleware, and applications that are available on all Power Systems running Linux.

The new 5U server features up to 1TB of 1066 MHz DDR3 memory, six SAS drive bays, a media bay for a single SATA DVD-RAM drive, six PCIe 8x slots, two SAS DASD controllers, a pair of 10Gb Ethernet ports with the option of two more as an upgrade.

Optimized for Linux on Power, IBM Cognos Business Intelligence provides an analytics engine that exploits the performance of Power for data-driven insight. In addition, WebSphere provides a comprehensive portfolio of software to support emerging Java-based applications for web clients and mobile devices. Pricing is available by request from IBM.
