Apple may be planning to shift some of its iMac production from Quanta to Pegatron, a report claims. Quanta currently manufactures several Mac lines, including the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. Some suppliers have allegedly been sending iMac components to Pegatron however, in spite of the firm normally only handling iPhone and iPad work for Apple. Even then, most iPhones and iPads are assembled by Foxconn.

If true, the split could be linked to problems Apple had with the 2012 iMac. That system switched to an even thinner design, made possible in part by a new display. Assembling the hardware proved unusually difficult, leaving the computer in low quantities as late as early 2013.

Pegatron has come under fire for violating labor rights and environmental standards. The company has been accused of demanding unpaid and/or excessive hours from workers, maintaining poor factory and living conditions, and polluting local water supplies.
