Photos obtained by a French site depict a rear shell for a supposed gold-colored iPhone 5S. Smaller gold parts have been leaked during the past few months, but have often been dismissed given how easy it would be to confuse them with aftermarket parts for the iPhone 5. In this case however the entire shell is gold-tinged, including the internals.

If it's authentic, it's not clear how a gold color might fit into Apple's options for the 5S. Other leaked shells have Apple's regular silver trim, which may mean that buyers will be able to choose between silver or gold trim in addition to white or black backing. That shift would complicate Apple's production process, but could help distinguish the 5S from the lower-cost, plastic-based 5C.

Currently Apple offers only a slate trim (for the black iPhone) and only a silver trim for the white iPhone. Gold would be a third trim choice. But whether it would be an option for the white iPhone or the black one or both or the single trim for a third panel color would be the next question.

...is anything other than clear finish base metal on such a sharp edge high wear device surface easily visually wear vulnerable & antithetical to the minimalist modern design zeitgeist of apple... ?

Apple has built devices that wear down nicely for some time now: the titanium PowerBooks' frame would chip and blacken; the iPod's rear shell would scratch and patinate, etc.

While people are always complaining, I rather like the way these things age, including the black iPhone 5.
