Sony is rumored to be prepping a mini version to follow its soon to be officially revealed Xperia i1 'Honami' flagship smartphone. However, unlike other 'mini' handsets taking the name from a flagship device like the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini that downgrade specifications along with their size, the Sony Xperia i1 mini is expected to retain its larger namesake's high-end Snapdragon 800 quad-core chipset and 20-megapixel camera and discrete Bionz image processor. The phone is expected to appeal to Android users keen for smaller 4.3-inch smartphone that still boasts high-end specifications.

Although retaining the same high-end specifications as the Xperia i1, the Xperia i1 mini is thought to make only one notable concession -- its 4.3-inch display will switch from a 1080p resolution, to a still very acceptable 720p resolution. Both of the new Xperia i1 devices are also expected to utilize Sony's Triluminos display tech, which looks superb on the Xperia Z Ultra that we are currently evaluating. Due to its smaller footprint, the Xperia i1 mini battery is also said to be limited to a still solid 2,400mAh, down from the 3,000mAh capacity cell that Sony is expected to pack into the larger 5-inch 1080p Xperia i1.

The Xperia i1 is expected to make its official debut at a pre-IFA special event in Berlin on September 1. While it is possible that the Xperia i1 mini could also be revealed at the same event, it may not ship at the same time. [via GSM Insider]
