Sony's recent run of interesting and unusual devices has continued with the launch of its new 3-in-1 Walkman headphones. The new headphones incorporate a discrete Walkman MP3 player, while the can also connect to an external device, or be used as surround sound speakers. There are two new models, the NWZ-WH505 and the NWZ-WH303, which differ in storage capacities, driver sizes and dynamic range.

The top of the range WH505 includes a 16GB capacity, which is good for storing up to 4,000 songs. It supports a wide range of audio formats including MP3, WMA, AAC-LC and Linear PCM. The WH505 utilizes a 40mm dome type headphone driver and can reproduce a dynamic sound range of 5-25,000Hz. When used as surround sound speakers, Sony pumps up the volume using its xLoud and VPT technology, while it can last up to 20 hours on a charge. Looking to revitalize the Walkman brand image, the logo is also backlit with LED lights.

The WH303 model has the same functionality, including file support, but reduces storage capacity to 4GB, or up to 1,000 songs. Its dome type drivers are 30mm, while it reproduces a narrower audio frequency response of 30-20,000Hz. It too can last up to 20 hours on a full charge and also includes the backlit logo. Both pairs of 3-in-1 headphones will work with Macs and PCs, while the WH303 also comes in white. Pricing and availability is still to be announced.
