Apple pulls Apple TV 6.0 update after reports of bricked set-tops

Apple has withdrawn the Apple TV v6.0 update it issued on Friday. A number of early installers have reported that the firmware bricked their set-top, rendering it unusable. Some people with less serious problems, such as a bad Wi-Fi connection, have nevertheless been forced to connect their hardware to iTunes via micro USB and restore to earlier firmware. Apple hasn't said when a fixed version of v6.0 might be available.

The firmware was intended to be a major update, opening access to iTunes Radio, streaming purchased music from iCloud, and AirPlaying iCloud content to someone else's Apple TV. It coincided with the launch of iTunes 11.1 and iOS 7 earlier in the week, which enabled iTunes Radio on Mac, Windows, and iOS devices.

Anecdotal, I know, but no problems here on a 2nd-generation (720p) AppleTV.

The new iTunes Radio is much better than the list-style, convoluted mess of categorized, streaming radio stations of yesterday.

A little too late for me. I tried updating yesterday, and it completely disabled my Apple TV. The Apple TV asks to be connected to iTunes, and then that screen disappears and then it's kaputz. Fortunately I had enough knowledge to make sense of the Discussion forums on Apple's website and had access to a micro-usb cable to connect it to iTunes on my computer to restore the ATV to factory settings. I'm betting most customers had no clue what was going on, if they even noticed the iTunes prompt, or even have the ability to connect their ATV to iTunes. Smart move from Apple, but inexcusable that it took several days to pull the update.

I tried to install the update, but got a failure on the update. Luckily all I needed was a restart and I was back where I started. It would have been a real pain to re-set everything up, finding all the passwords needed for accounts, etc.

That makes me feel a lot better, since when I went to upgrade my G3 over the weekend prior to the announcement of the update being pulled, the update didn't show up, and I was wondering what was wrong and what I was going to have to do to get it updated. Turns out I either had really good or really bad timing, depending on how optimistic I am about failure rate on the update.

I would assume, as with most things like this, that the proportion of actual bricked devices is relatively low--probably well under 1%--but was obviously high enough to get Apple to pull it, so it must have been pretty serious.

gen3 - problems on update- had to reset it twice via usb before it started working- but since then, it has been fine.
