Samsung has introduced a new image sensor for high-end mobile devices. The Isocell CMOS sensors promise to significantly increase light sensitivity and color fidelity in low-light shooting conditions. Overall module size has also been reduced, enabling the sensor to be built into thinner devices.

The new technology is said to further improve upon the popular back-side illumination construction, adding a physical barrier between neighboring pixels. The isolation is said to enable more photons to be collected from each photodiode, while minimizing electrical crosstalk between pixels and improving dynamic range

Samsung will initially offer an eight-megapixel Isocell module with 1.12um pixels in a 1/4-inch optical format, with expected availability in the fourth quarter of the year.
