Samsung and LG Display are ending their display-related patent lawsuits against each other, with a view to working together on the technologies in the future. The agreement, which effectively ends a courtroom battle that commenced in September 2012, was rumored to have been close to dropping in March of this year, but has only just finished.

Statements from the two companies received by The Standard confirms the ending of legal action. "It was agreed that we two should focus more on cementing our leadership in the global market by cooperation, instead of engaging in all-consuming patent disputes," said Samsung Display. LG Display echoed the sentiment, writing "What's most important for both of us is upgrading our competitiveness globally."

The initial injunction from Samsung claimed that LG had stolen Samsung's technologies in OLED and LED displays, with Samsung seeking approximately $880,000 in compensation for instances where LG used said technologies or made confidential intellectual properties public. A number of senior engineers were indicted on charges of leaking confidential information from Samsung to LG, with Samsung also demanding an apology and a pledge from LG to not poach any more Samsung employees.

Despite the two companies working together to clear up one patent-related legal mess, there is still no love lost between them. Samsung has sued LG for "tarnishing its corporate image" when both sides argued over kitchen appliance capacities, while LG has attempted to ambush the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S4 by strategic Optimus G advertisement creation and placement, and also accused Samsung of infringing on its own eye-tracking patents in the smartphone.
