Google has apologized for Gmail problems that plagued many accounts for up to 11 hours on Monday. Simultaneous but unrelated network failures affected 29 percent of all messages sent through the company's servers. The average delay was only 2.6 seconds, however 1.5 percent of the messages were delayed by more than two hours.
"The message delivery delays were triggered by a dual network failure," Google said in a statement, as quoted
. "This is a very rare event in which two separate, redundant network paths both stop working at the same time."
The company quickly worked to restore network capacity, clearing most of the message backlog by 1pm PST and fully restoring service by 4pm PST. The problems are said to have been limited to message delays, however some users reported additional problems reading attachments and accessing older messages.
Google promises to beef up its network and backup capacity over the next few weeks, with the aim of reworking the system to protect against another dual-network failure. The company is also taking a closer look at its internal practices to "more quickly and effectively respond to network issues."
