Google has previewed a new research endeavor, known as "Open Project," that enables a smartphone screen to be projected onto any separate display. Several technologies already accomplish this goal, however Google's approach uses the phone's camera to place and scale one or more device projections onto the larger display without requiring any specialized hardware.
To begin the process, a user simply captures a QR code presented on a display. The QR code then turns into a checkboard, which moves across the larger display as the user points to the desired presentation location. Touch gestures on the phone screen further enable the projected image to be scaled.
The Open Project servers and web-based framework enable several phones to be projected onto a wide range of displays, either locally or in remotely. The phone application can also be remotely manipulated if the projection display supports touch input.
