Sony has made its HMZ-T3W available for pre-order
. As we discovered in our hands-on
with the device, it is much improved over the original HMZ-T1 that we reviewed
in April last year. The new third-generation model is improved in every regard and in addition to giving fatigue-free 3D viewing thanks to zero-cross talk, users can now take the device out of the house for on the go viewing.
The HMZ-T3W has been redesigned and takes on the look and feel of a high-end device befitting its $1000 price tag. It is also now much lighter, tipping the scales at 320 grams, while audio quality has been enhanced with an upgrade from 5.1 virtual surround to 7.1 channels. Things have also improved ergonomically, with the device fitting much better and distributing its weight more evenly around a wearer's head. On the go use will last around an hour longer than at typical length movie feature, while the battery box will simultaneously keep a user's smartphone charged.
Picture quality remains the same. Dual 3-inch OLED panels with a resolution of 1280x720 pixels convey users the sensation that they are viewing a 150-inch display from twelve feet away, while providing viewers with a 45-degree field of view. As the 3D experience is delivered through separate lenses, users do not experience any cross-talk, giving it arguably the best 3D viewing experience currently possible.
