Nest has introduced a smoke and carbon-monoxide detector that aims to overcome many of the annoyances and drawbacks of traditional detectors. Rather than simply sounding a loud alarm at the first hint of smoke, the Protect starts by using a human voice and changing light colors to tell residents what's wrong and where the problem.

The early heads-up system provides a way to quickly silence the device if it is known to be reacting to a non-emergency, such as burning toast in the kitchen. Residents also don't have to struggle to silence the alarm, which can be dismissed by standing under it and waving an arm.

Like the company's thermostat, the Protect can be connected to a home Wi-Fi network to be remotely monitored and controlled from a computer or smartphone. Users can view the status of any problem as it transition from a heads-up alert to an alarm emergency and back to normal as the smoke or carbon monoxide clears.

The Protect is available for pre-order for $129, in black or white colors and an optional AC power connection.
