Google is currently in the later stages of developing its own smart watch, which could be ready for mass production "within months," according to the Wall Street Journal. A new report claims that Google is in talks with suppliers based in Asia to start the production of the device, following on from earlier rumors and patent-related discoveries.

The smart watch will run on Android and feature Google Now integration, claims report sources, with the company also working on reducing its power consumption to avoid the same power issues that plague other smart watches such as the Samsung Galaxy Gear. Unfortunately, there is little other detail about the device, though it does mention that it will "communicate with other devices such as a smartphone," suggesting that it will not operate as a standalone unit.

Google does already have some experience when it comes to wearable devices, with the Google Glass being relatively similar to a smart watch, if worn on the head instead of the wrist. Google also revealed in late August that it had acquired smart watch manufacturer WIMM Labs, most probably in mid-2012, with all staff being covered under the Android arm of the company. WIMM Labs offered a developer kit in the form of the WIMM One, a $300 device that included a number of sensors and pre-loaded micro-apps, and could be paired to Android, BlackBerry and iOS devices. It is likely that, if Google is indeed making a smart watch, it will have a more refined design than the WIMM One.
