Microsoft proved itself an equal opportunity trash talker last week, releasing a Surface ad that, for the first time in a while, does not bash Apple's iPad
. Instead, the software giant took aim at Samsung's Galaxy Tab 3 10.1, putting it under much the same scrutiny in stacking it against the Surface RT. CNet noted
the ad, which puts Microsoft in the odd position of attacking one of its smartphone and PC manufacturing partners.
The ad points out that Microsoft's tablet has a full-sized USB port, a feature that Samsung's Galaxy Tab 3 lacks. It also has an HDMI out port, as well as a number of other outputs and inputs that the Galaxy Tab does not. Galaxy Tab owners must instead purchase additional connectors in order to make their tablet interface with other device.
Another ad points out the fact that the Surface devices support multiple user accounts, while Samsung's tablet doesn't. The Surface tablet also allows for control and monitoring functions, allowing parents to set limits on what other users can access on the device.
The ad puts Microsoft into direct competition with Samsung, which manufactures both smartphones and computers running Microsoft's Windows Phone and Windows 8 operating systems. Samsung, though, has become highly dependent on Google's Android platform, as its bestselling devices run that rival operating system.
Microsoft's Windows RT – the operating system that the Surface 2 runs – has struggled to gain traction in the consumer computing space. The operating system was developed to run on power-sipping ARM processors, and as such it cannot run legacy Windows apps. Microsoft recently intimated
that it would not continue in its three-platform structure – Windows Phone, Windows RT, and Windows 8 – for too long. The company has not, though, indicated when it will merge or phase out platforms.
