Sales of the Tesco Hudl
entry-level Android tablet have been sufficient enough for the British supermarket chain to plan for a sequel. After selling more than 35,000
just days after launch, the retailer has revealed that it has managed to shift more than 300,000 units of the tablet from its shelves, far more than the company originally planned for the run-up to Christmas.
Michael Comish, chief digital officer at Tesco, told The Guardian
it had trouble keeping stock of the device. "They are flying off the shelves so quickly, it has run out of stock twice." Sold at £119 ($195), or as low as £60 ($98) when bought using Tesco Clubcard vouchers via an offer, the success of the device has made other larger retailers offer similar low-cost tablets to their customers. Chief executive Philip Clarke advised that Tesco will offer an updated version of the Hudl in 2014, with the new model being "an enhanced version."
The Hudl has a seven-inch 1,440x900 display, backed by a quad-core 1.5GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, and 16GB of expandable storage, along with front and rear cameras, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, and dual-band Wi-Fi. Onboard is a relatively untouched stock installation of Android 4.2.2, though it also ships with a number of Tesco-owned apps pre-installed, such as BlinkBox
and Clubcard TV.
