Apple's share of the smartphone market in the US continues to grow slowly, though chief rival Samsung is growing at a faster rate but still has a long way to go to catch up. Android sales combined continue to dominate, but have seen very slow or flat growth in recent months -- however, in the latest three-month ComScore MobiLens survey
, the platform managed twice the growth rate of iOS. Windows Phone also gained share, with all three platforms benefitting from BlackBerry's continuing fall.
The survey, based on the number of smartphone subscribers to various top US carriers, showed Apple and its iOS platform capturing 40.6 percent share, a rise of 0.2 percent. Samsung grew to 25.4 percent, a gain of 1.3 percent. Motorola reached seven percent share, gaining only 0.1 percent since the end of July. HTC lost exactly the same share percentage that Samsung gained, and LG rounded out the top five OEM list with a small drop of 0.2 percent to settle at 6.6 percent.
Android's overall gain the US market was far less than Samsung's impressive gain due to the losses in share of most manufacturers. As a combined platform, Android saw a modest 0.4 percent gain in share to 52.2 percent, but this was still double the gain posted by Apple. BlackBerry continued to slide, losing 0.7 percent share to take third-place in the platform rankings with 3.6 percent. Microsoft gained 0.2 percent share for a total of 3.2 percent of the market, while the now-discontinued Symbian fell again to 0.2 percent share.
Because Apple's introduction of the new iPhone models happened in the middle of the survey and the much-sought-after iPhone 5s saw extremely constrained supplies throughout its debut period, Apple may be in a position to post substantially larger gains during the holiday quarter as the full sales impact of its newest iPhones is felt. While still a minor player compared to Apple and Samsung, Microsoft (and its subsidiary Nokia) have also seen small but positive gains in recent quarters as Windows Phone begins to find a niche.
