Sony and Panasonic
are dissolving their partnership for producing OLED televisions. The partnership
, formed in June last year, was formed with the aim of sharing the costs of manufacturing the panels, something more expensive than other displays such as TFTs, though apparently a number of technology issues blighted the efforts and in turn forced the companies to go their separate ways.
that the partnership would have seen Panasonic's production method, consisting of printing organic material on top of a substrate, combined with Sony's own OLED technology, with the hope of creating a base for mass production this year, and a view to manufacturing together afterwards. It is said that the resulting panels were not durable enough for production, and also failed to lower the cost of production.

The two companies will be working separately on the issue, with both concentrating more on 4K-resolution televisions instead of OLED technology. NPD DisplaySearch downgraded its shipment estimates for OLED TVs earlier this week, from 20,000 to 5,000 for this year, and from 9 million to 4 million by 2017. 4K or Ultra HD televisions, by comparison, is believed to ship 1.95 million units by the end of this year, with the 60.65 million 2017 estimate to account for more than 20-percent of all LCD TV shipments.
