The Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show will be hosting what is possibly the first iBeacon scavenger hunt, using official mobile apps for the exposition. Using the CES suite of apps for iOS or Android, show-goers will be able to collect virtual badges when the come in close proximity to one of the beacons on the show floor.

The project is using the iBeacon development kit from Radius Networks in conjunction with SensorTag NFC deployments by Texas Instruments for the Android devices. The scavenger hunt is aimed at getting attendees to visit more locations on the show floor than they otherwise might.

The new iBeacon technology is an indoor positioning system that Apple calls "a new class of low-powered, low-cost transmitters that can notify nearby iOS 7 devices of their presence." The technology enables an iOS device or other hardware to send push notifications to iOS devices in close proximity. Apple's iBeacon works on Low Energy Bluetooth (BLE), also known as Bluetooth 4.0 or Bluetooth Smart.
