The iPhone managed some modest sales share gains in Japan, Europe, and Australia during the March quarter, according to new smartphone data from Kantar Worldpanel. Japan was the strongest of the bunch, advancing 8.6 points year-over-year to 57.6 percent. The country is in fact the only one where the iPhone outstripped Android. Even in the US, where Apple is based, the iPhone dipped from 43.7 percent to 35.9 percent last quarter, whereas Android devices grew from 49.3 percent to 57.6.
The iPhone increased 2 points in Australia to sit at 33.1 percent, while Europe inched ahead a tenth of a point to 19.2 percent. The European situation
becomes more complex, however, when looking at individual countries. Apple gained ground in the UK, France, and Spain for instance, but lost share in Germany and Italy. Windows Phone -- otherwise a minor player -- was in fact more popular than the iPhone in Italy, scoring 13.9 percent versus 12.9 percent.
In most regions, such as China and Germany, Android is in overwhelming control. The most extreme example is Spain, where the platform has an 88.6 percent share, despite the encroachment of the iPhone and Windows Phone.
