named its next Chief Product Officer this weekend as Chris Cox, in a promotion from within the company. Cox, who formerly held the position of vice president of product, began working as an engineer for the company in 2005 and later worked as the company's human resources director. He is also credited with helping invent Facebook's news feed, as well as the company's "Social by Design" strategy.
The promotion will not result in an organizational change within Facebook, but rather reaffirms Cox's position as a leader within the company. Cox has been a part of Zuckerberg's "M-team," a group of high-level, trusted advisors within the company that meet directly with the site's founder to make decisions on the future.
A statement from a company spokesperson offered that "Cox's elevation to Chief Product Officer is a reflection of the major role he plays in overseeing the products and features at Facebook." The spokesperson goes on to say that Cox "has been instrumental in shaping the evolution of people's experience using Facebook, our culture and our company, and he'll continue to do the same as CPO"
News of Cox's promotion was issued by Mark Zuckerberg in an internal announcement to the company Saturday afternoon.
