British retailer Tesco is building upon the success of its Hudl Android tablet, by launching its first smartphone. Chief executive Philip Clarke revealed the Android smartphone plans in a radio interview, as well as confirming the supermarket chain will be releasing the successor to the Hudl, the mid-ranged Hudl 2, this September in the United Kingdom.

Speaking to BBC News, Clarke claimed the smartphone will use Android and will have specifications comparable to the Samsung Galaxy S5, though it will apparently be aggressively priced. Just as with the Hudl, the device will be preloaded with apps for Tesco or Tesco-owned services, such as Blinkbox video streaming, and its online shopping services. While Tesco owns its own mobile phone network, Tesco Mobile, the smartphone is likely to be an unlocked device for use on all networks.

Aside from a launch date and a name, Clarke did not reveal any further details about the Hudl 2. The original Hudl had a 7-inch 1440x900 display, a quad-core 1.5GHz processor with 16GB of storage, and a battery said to last for up to nine hours. Tesco sold the tablet through its stores for £119 ($200), competitively priced against other similar-specification devices, though customers with sufficient Club Card vouchers were theoretically able to get it for effectively half the price at some times.
