Nikon is expanding its 1-series of cameras with the Nikon 1 S2, a mirrorless camera using a 14.2-megapixel AF CMOS sensor. At the same time, Nikon has announced the pricing and availability of the Nikon 1 J4 camera it initially revealed last month, with both the J4 and the S2 set to ship in the United States over the next two months.

The S2 is an entry-level model succeeding the
Nikon 1 S1 from early 2013. Working with the Expeed 4A image processor, it offers an ISO range of 200 to 12,800, a shooting rate of 20fps with autofocus or 60fps at fixed focus. AF-area modes include 135 focus areas for single-point AF, including phase-detection for the central 73 spots, 41 focus areas for Auto-area AF, a face priority AF, and subject tracking, with video capabilities including 1080p at 60fps, and frame rates of 400fps and up to 1,200fps at lower resolutions.

Accepting microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC memory cards, the S2 includes a rechargeable battery said to last for up to 270 shots, has a 3-inch 460k-dot TFT monitor on the back, and will work over Wi-Fi when combined with the WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter.

The J4 has an 18.4-megapixel AF CMOS sensor with the same image processor as the S2. While it has similar shutter speeds, the J4 opts for 105 focus points with phase-detection AF, 171 points for contrast-detection, has built-in Wi-Fi, and a higher-resolution 1037k-dot display on the rear.

Nikon is shipping the J4 this month in a choice of four colors for $650 with the 1 Nikkor 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 PD-Zoom lens, with two other lens bundles also set to be available at the same time. The S4, bundled with the 1 Nikkor 11-27mm f/3.5-5.6 lens, will cost $450 when it ships in June, with a two-lens kit also set to ship at the same time for $700.
