Bubbli has announced today that it has been acquired by the popular online storage service Dropbox
. The application makes use of the computing power of the cloud to piece together "bubble" images, a technology that would add to Dropbox's growing stable of photo-centric offerings. The pickup would further diversify photo services from the company, as it builds on the commercial and social side of photography beyond just sorting and storage.
Previous image-centric purchases from the company include Loom and Snapjoy, both of which saw their applications shut down. Currently Bubbli is still available, but for how long is unknown. Loom shut down a month after its purchase, while Snapjoy lived on for around six months. A statement issued by the company tells users that bubbles are somehow being integrated into Dropbox, but doesn't offer specifics.
"We're thrilled to be joining Dropbox," said co-founders Ben Newhouse and Terrence McArdle in the notice. "Bubbli's goal has always been to capture experiences in a way that feels like you are not just viewing photos, but reliving memories. By joining forces, we'll be able to continue to transform how you experience your memories on a much larger scale."
The iOS app allows users to create 360-degree panoramic photos with sound, piecing together the captured footage in the cloud for users to display at any time. The experience of the bubbles can be shared to others, as they see and hear what the photographer did as they moved around to capture the images.
Adding to the library of photo services, Dropbox is most likely trying to build upon its Carousel app and photo service. The purchase of Bubbli makes sense from a technical standpoint, since it could utilize the cloud power of Dropbox, adding to the possibilities of the technology down the line.
