After showing up on the New Zealand iTunes store, Square Enix
has officially announced
that Dragon Quest VIII has been released for iOS and Android. The game, which was a popular Japanese role-playing game (JRPG) released for Playstation 2 in 2004, comes to mobile gaming almost 10 years after its release in North America.
Square Enix says that the game has seen its controls streamlined, adding that Dragon Quest VIII has been optimized for both smartphones and tablets. This includes the ability for players to change the position of the directional pad to allow for one-handed play styles. The game also plays in portrait mode rather than in landscape like most mobile titles.
The combat system in the game has been changed some to give players the option to have one-tap battles in addition to some more complex play. The tension system remains for boosting character attacks, as does the alchemy pot used for creating new items. Characters still utilize skill points when characters level up, retaining some customization that JRPG players are familiar with.
