Earlier this week, Ubisoft made an announcement
regarding sales on its newest game property, Watch Dogs
. The game, which saw a rocky start on some platforms, is said to have sold over four million copies during its first week. The number of copies sold has lead Ubisoft to claim that it is the "best-selling new IP at launch across the entire video game industry."
Ubisoft went over the sales success not only for the first week of sales, but also for the one million first day
sales the game was able to put up. Both numbers captured sales records for the company. The game was able to sustain a drop off in consumer anticipation when its release was pushed back, leaving these numbers to be more impressive than those of a normal launch.
"With such strong sales momentum and positive feedback from gamers, Watch Dogs
has positioned itself as the must-have game of the moment," said Ubisoft's Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Tony Key. "We're really proud of this achievement, and are confident that the Watch Dogs
brand has a promising future."
The release of the game hasn't been without its hiccups. Ubisoft's portal Uplay caused a number of problems during the launch of the game on PC, with many gamers finding themselves unable to play the game, stuck at the loading screen. The company is still looking into the problem, which may or may not be tied to the Uplay reward system. Currently, there is a thread on the loading issue that is closing in on 220 pages
. Ubisoft confirmed the issue on Twitter.
Additionally, there were problems for PC gamers with AMD hardware. Numerous customers complained about the state of the game, which included stuttering and crashes. Users of Nvidia hardware appeared to be less susceptible to the problems. AMD and Nvidia squared off in a series of articles, both pointing fingers at the problems in the industry that caused such issues.
