Oculus VR brings Naughty Dog co-founder Jason Rubin aboard

Oculus VR announced yesterday that they have welcomed a game console veteran to the company. Jason Rubin, a co-founder of the Sony studio Naughty Dog, has number of big-name franchises under his belt, including Crash Bandicoot and Jak & Daxter. Rubin left Naughty Dog in 2004 before joining THQ as president in 2012.

The company is bringing Rubin aboard to lead first-party game teams in Dallas, Irvine, Menlo Park, San Francisco and Seattle. More than just being a part of game teams, Rubin also has experience on a number of levels, including programming and directing. A photo and video remixing project called Flektor was co-created by Rubin in 2006. Flektor was sold to Fox Interactive Media in 2007 for somewhere between $15-20 million.

Rubin took to Twitter yesterday to confirm that he was working at Oculus.



"The team at Oculus has been working to push the boundaries of what's possible with hardware and software," said Rubin. "I'm excited to bring together a new division, dedicated to building high-quality VR content that helps define the platform and inspire others to do the same."

Rubin's hire follows a number of talent acquisitions for the virtual reality company. Oculus announced earlier this month that they recruited Jason Holtman from Valve as their head of platform. In the blog post covering Holtman's hire, a group photo was shown highlighting a number of other developers Oculus has recently hired.

The photo included a number of people from development studios such as Kenneth Scott and Paul Pepera, formerly of 343 Industries. On the hardware side, Oculus has picked up the original author of 3dfx Glide, Brian Hook, and co-inventor of the Cortex-M, Ian Field.

Rubin's experience with console favorite titles, as well as witnessing the downfall of a studio, could prove to be a benefit to Oculus. Rubin said that he had wanted to help define a future where the Rift was considered to be a normal piece of hardware.
