Microsoft is planning to fight off notebooks running Chrome OS, with the help of low-cost computers being released in time for the holiday season. Revealed at the Worldwide Partner Conference 2014 today, Microsoft Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner claimed a number of notebooks running Windows will directly competing against ">Chromebooks, with HP said to be preparing a $199 notebook for sale.

The specifications of HP's "Stream" are unknown, reports The Verge, aside from the price and release window. Turner did earmark other similar Windows notebooks that are coming out soon, though both the 15.6-inch Acer Aspire ES1 and the 11.6-inch Toshiba notebooks are priced at $250, a similar price to existing Chromebook offerings with matching specifications. HP will also launch two other Windows devices for the holidays, with seven-inch and eight-inch versions starting from $99.

"We are going to participate at the low-end. We've got a great value proposition against Chromebooks, we are not ceding the market to anyone," advised Turner.

Microsoft has previously been put under pressure by system producers to lower the cost of Windows, with the company answering the call by making it free for devices with screens smaller than nine inches in size. Even so, the software producer needs to be wary of modernized Chromebooks on the way from hardware producers using Core i3 processors, with one of the first being Acer's upgraded C720.
