Yeah you're right. However I have a few other options... my network is a random mixture of Linux, Win2k and OS X machines (I 'switched' as soon as OS X was available - I love the hardware but OS 9 was simply not good enough).
Brother have a multifunction laser printer / fax / copier available for £349 in the UK. They have OS X drivers on the web site. It only has a parallel / USB connection, but I've found that Win 2k server (with Print Services for Unix) can directly connect the printer (parallel) and serve the printer out via LPR to all unix clients.
Each unix client needs a driver, and since OS X has a driver, and can connect to LPR printers, it all works perfectly.
It's not exactly a 'network printer' but it works pretty much the same (my servers are on 24/7 anyway). Incidentally Netgear sell a ethernet-parallel print server box as well, you don't need to spend £230 on the JetDirect box.
I wasn't exactly looking to get bargain basement hardware here - cost was only a criterion since I'm seriously tempted by the 17" iMac. And I've already put orders in for a 1 GHz Cube upgrade and a GeForce 3 to soup up my Cube
(still waiting - anyone here actually received the Powerlogix Cube upgrade yet?????)
