Well, Palm's new operating system and devices to go with it are coming out soon, but probably not as soon as you need. There have been leaked photos of a device, codenamed Oslo, that probably uses the Palm universal connector but maybe doesn't (making worthless any peripherals you have that use the hotsync connector).
Personally, if you don't use much in the way of peripherals I would go with a Sony. The screens are a zillion times nicer to look at. Poke around for a T615C. They have roughly the same size as the Palm 500. The T615c's were discontinued for a newer model with worse battery life about a month ago. I'm sure you can find a new 615 for sale if you look around, though.
