Big disappointment here with the lack of any new dipslays from Apple or price drops.
Shoulda known better......
Looking for recommendations for a 17 19" flat panel that's a good deal and delivers as good or better quality than the Apple flat panel. Need one right away, so your expert opinions is sought.
Thanks in advance
Woody

I looked at a *LOT* of Flat Panels when I purchased mine last year.
I came back to Apple and got the 17" Studio Display LCD.
I love it. You couldn't pry it from my cold dead fingers.

Dell 1900FP, or Dell 2000FP (20" UXGA) if you can manage around $1200 (when Dell has their 20% off sales)

Actually, I had quite a few problems with the 17" LCD. I went through several units, each having blotchy areas of low contrast (for example, not enough contrast to see the OSX pinstripes in the menu bar clearly) I was very dissappointed. I'm in the same boat as you. I've got a 733 PM and a 15" LCD (which performs beautifully). I need more screen real estate for design and had high hopes for some new LCDs from Apple. I'll let you know if I find anything.

I'll consider myself lucky. Mine has worked flawlessly.
(Which is more than I can say for the LCD on my HP laptop.)

The new issue of Consumer Reports rates the Apple 17 inch display as by far the best they tested. It'll cost you a couple of bucks to read about them.

Take a gander at the Samsung SyncMaster 770 TFT or the 760 (if that's the current model). At around $600 for a 17" LCD they're cheap, but quallity is high. I'd say quallity is within 95% of Apple's, and they cost so much less. The 17" is definitely the sweet spot for Samsungs when figuring price vs. features.
I had one that my dad was constantly admiring. "Gorgeous screen," he'd say every time he came by. When he was away on vacation I let myself into his house and replaced his old 17" CRT with my 17" Samsung LCD as a gift. Nothin' but smiles! Geez, I can't believe I did that for a Dell user.

I dunno about anyone else, but i could never bring myself to connect anything with the word "Dell" on it to my Mac. I'd rather pay a little more for an Apple display (or as an alternative, the ViewSonic or Formac) than put any money in Michael Dell's pocket.

I've heard nothing but good things about Apple LCD's. Cnet has them rated as number one in the 17" 19" LCD monitor category.

Is anyone using a Dell 1900FP with their Mac? If so, what are your feelings on the product?
How often does the 20% off sale come up?
Lastly, I've got a G4 450MP. Do I need an adapter to hook it up to G4.
Thanks in advance

I have a Sony 18.1" lcd which I am quite happy with. Has both dvi and vga outputs as well as intergrated speakers. It's very stylish and well designed much like Apple's products.
I considered an Apple LCD but I didn't think 17" would cut it and I'm not too big on white or the display needing to rest on the desk.
I think Sony still has a $100 rebate going. I bought mine new from compgeeks, which was a little scary (mainly because of their logo) but they had the lowest price and I used a 10% off coupon as well.

Good luck.

The 1900FP has both DVI and VGA inputs. 20% off happens every couple of weeks. Check out www.bensbargains.net they will list it.

OK Dell Home currently has 20% off Dell branded peripherals. Free shipping over $99.
Dell 2000FP 20" 1600x1200 DVI/Analog/S-Video LCD = $1199
Dell 1900FP 19" 1280x1024 Digital LCD = $959
Dell 1702FP 17" Digital 1280x1024 LCD = $639
Given the prices I would get the 2000FP, more resolution and screen area for not much more. Unless you are on a budget in which case the 17" is great value for money.

The LaCie photon18blue:
$ 1299: rather expensive, but probably as close to an Apple monitor as you can get. 18.1", DVI, VGA, optional hood (included), landscape and portrait modes (the latter is, however, still unavailable under OS X), cool dark blue color. Has worked flawlessly for me...

Don't even bother looking at anything else. Okay...go ahead...but...
You'll come back to the Apple 17" LCD every time. I have one, love it.

Formac has a nice looking 17" lcd out for $799. It's design is similar to apple's.
